Although Italian or Austrian routes can be enchanting, you don’t have to travel abroad to experience a beautiful journey. Poland also has wonderful roads that captivate travelers. One such road is the Road of 100 Turns in Lower Silesia. If you don’t have plans for the weekend, it’s worth driving this route because the views are breathtaking.
The Road of 100 Turns, also known as the Road of 100 Bends, is located in the Stołowe Mountains, specifically on the route of the voivodeship road no. 387 in the Kłodzko Valley, in Lower Silesia. It connects Radków with Kudowa-Zdrój, passing landmarks such as the Filary Skalne (Rock Pillars), Stroczy Zakręt (Stroczy Bend), Szczeliniec Wielki from Karłów, Fort Karola, and Lisia Przełęcz (Fox Pass). The entire route is 23 kilometers long, but it spans different elevations. The highest point is at 780 meters above sea level, with a difference of about 400 meters between the highest and lowest sections. Additionally, the road offers picturesque landscapes. The views change depending on the elevation – at one moment, you see impressive rock formations, and the next, you find yourself surrounded by the depths of a dense forest. It’s definitely worth driving this route.
The Road of 100 Turns has been in this location for over 150 years. Construction began in 1867 and was completed three years later. The road indeed has a hundred serpentine curves, making it very challenging. Inexperienced drivers should avoid it because driving too fast and not being able to react in stressful situations can be truly dangerous. It can be particularly hazardous in winter. Interestingly, scenes from the famous film "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" were filmed behind one of the bends. The film crew set up near the Błędne Skały (Errant Rocks). If you want to explore the area, it’s worth planning your route carefully. In February of this year, a 45-meter section from the "King’s Head" rock to the turn to Pasterka was closed due to a landslide that damaged the roadbed supporting the roadway. The end date for the repair work has not been announced.
