Mariola M. was a respected primary school teacher in Czarna Białostocka. Despite her gentle and cheerful disposition and striking beauty, she had been without a partner for quite some time. But everything changed in 1997. Jerzy, the father of one of her students, completely swept her off her feet. Their affair lasted several years, but no one could foresee the immense tragedy that would ensue. When Jerzy decided to end the relationship, Mariola was devastated. She decided to take revenge on her former lover by targeting his son.
Mariola M. was a young, beautiful woman who worked as a teacher at the primary school in Czarna Białostocka. Her students appreciated her as a teacher. She won many accolades, and her pupils remembered her as warm and very helpful. They eagerly sought her help with their problems and attended her classes with a smile. Despite her joyful demeanor and captivating beauty, she was single. But that changed in 1997 when she met Jerzy P. during a sports event. Jerzy was married and had three children. It later emerged that he was also the chairman of the Parents' Council, and his youngest son, Piotrek, was in the first grade at the school where Mariola taught.
The couple quickly grew fond of each other, leading to a passionate affair. It's worth noting that Jerzy initially told Mariola outright that he had no intention of leaving his wife. However, Mariola didn't seem too concerned and simply enjoyed the man's company. Over time, however, Jerzy began to express his desire to start a new life, saying he was staying with his wife only for the sake of their son, Piotrek. Mariola understood his situation, as she was an experienced teacher aware of the trauma a family breakup could cause a young child. Still, deep down, she dreamed of one day being able to be with Jerzy officially.
Czarna Białostocka is not a large town. Many people know their neighbors and often, even inadvertently, are aware of what is happening in their lives. It didn't take long for rumors about Mariola and Jerzy to spread. People were curious and eagerly observed the actions of both Mariola and the married man. After all, Mariola was a respected teacher with a good reputation. Jerzy, on the other hand, was a local businessman who owned a successful sawmill. Because of this, when they began their affair, locals quickly noticed them together and started gossiping. However, the criticism focused mainly on Mariola.
According to people in Czarna Białostocka, it was Mariola who seduced the businessman and was breaking up his family. She was harassed with silent phone calls, threats, and even vulgar messages scrawled on her apartment door. Many people, under such pressure, would have ended the affair or even fled to another city. But Mariola remained resolute. Her mother, however, could not bear it. She, too, became a target of the gossip. Neighbors were less inclined to invite her to social gatherings, and some even avoided greeting her. It is said that Mariola's mother was the first to inform Jerzy's family about the affair, frustrated by the number of rumors and threats, and continuously pressured Mariola to end the relationship. She supposedly monitored her daughter's outings and even checked her underwear. Despite this, Mariola remained determined and continued her affair with Jerzy. The relationship lasted for four years.
In 2001, Jerzy unexpectedly decided to end his affair with Mariola. It was a heavy blow for her. The end of the relationship completely shattered her mentally. A distraught Mariola fell into depression. She was so unhappy that she even attempted suicide twice. She was embittered by the whole situation—she had been deeply invested in her relationship with Jerzy and had endured much unpleasantness and insults from both her loved ones and strangers in Czarna Białostocka. During their breakup, Jerzy said that their long-standing relationship was destructive to his family. He also stated that he wanted to fight for his marriage and ensure the well-being of Piotrek, his youngest child. After the initial shock passed, Mariola focused her attention on the boy. She decided to take revenge on Jerzy by taking away what he loved most.
The heartbroken woman planned a murder. On April 25, 2001, she arrived at school much earlier than usual (she worked in the afternoons). However, this did not raise much suspicion. After all, she had worked at the school for years and did not arouse anyone's suspicions. Around 9:30 AM, she asked two students to tell Piotrek that he was needed in the nurse's office. The children were not surprised by the teacher's request and quickly ran to the art classroom where Piotrek's class was and delivered the message. Without hesitation, Piotrek headed to the nurse's office, but what awaited him was a terrible surprise.
Inside, there was no nurse, only Mariola. Unfortunately, it is not known whether she attacked the boy immediately or if they talked first. However, at some point, she grabbed a utility knife and began stabbing the terrified Piotrek relentlessly. She targeted his head and neck. Piotrek tried to defend himself. He screamed and tried to escape the office. The struggle and screams were even heard by two passing teachers, who immediately tried to get inside. However, Mariola did not let them in. It wasn't until the gym teacher was called that the door was forced open. Unfortunately, it was too late.
As soon as the door was opened, Mariola fled the office. The teachers were unable to stop her. Meanwhile, Piotrek lay curled up on the floor in a pool of blood. He died before the ambulance arrived. Classes were canceled that day, and the other students were led out through side exits. However, many people began gathering around the school, waiting for news about the tragedy. Among them were terrified parents, anxiously waiting for information about which student had been harmed, fearing for their children. Jerzy and his wife were also among the frightened parents. Shortly afterward, the search for Mariola began.
Although much evidence suggests that Mariola planned the murder, according to her later testimony, she couldn't calm down for a long time after committing the crime. She wasn't sure what to do next. For two days, she hid in the Knyszyńska Forest. She later recalled that during the cold nights in the woods, she even considered taking her own life. Her next step was to go to a convent in Marki, near Warsaw. She asked for asylum there and also called her sister, seeking advice on what to do next. According to her testimony, she also considered turning herself in to the police. However, the authorities caught her on the night of April 26-27. Mariola confessed to the crime but claimed she acted in a fit of rage. She underwent examinations and was soon brought to trial.
Although Mariola insisted that she acted in a fit of rage, psychologists and psychiatrists concluded that she was aware of her actions on the day of the murder. The District Court in Białystok issued a verdict in July 2001. Mariola was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The judge had no doubt that she attacked Piotrek out of revenge and that she had planned everything. A key argument supporting the idea that the teacher acted with premeditation and intent for revenge was the fact that the murder weapon was a utility knife. Why is this significant? It turns out that the knife was a gift from Jerzy. Many people were also astonished by Mariola's behavior. During the trial, no emotion was visible on her face.
