They Killed Because They Wanted to Go to the Prom: "Osa" Was the First Woman in Poland to Be Sentenced to Life Imprisonment

On January 19, 1996, 22-year-old Jolanta Brzozowska was murdered. The perpetrators stabbed her several times and brutally beat her with a baseball bat. Among those convicted for this tragic crime was Monika Osińska, nicknamed "Osa," who became the first woman in Poland to receive the maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Jolanta Brzozowska worked in an office in the Tarchomin district of Warsaw. "Osa" arranged to meet her, pretending to be a young woman looking for a job. She brought two friends with her, and when Jola began the job interview, the first blow to the head was struck.

They Needed Money for the Prom. Jolanta Brzozowska Paid With Her Life

One of the men delivered the blow, but the other soon joined in the crime. They stabbed Jolanta several times, hit her in the head with a baseball bat, and used a chair leg to beat her. They stole 400 PLN, two phones, jewelry, and pagers. They left the battered Jolanta in the office and carelessly went out for pizza. Why did these young people commit such a cruel crime?

"Osa," "Jogi," and "Gołąb" were in their final year of high school. They were preparing for their prom, which they desperately wanted to attend but needed money for, including for drugs. They wondered how to get the cash and eventually decided on robbery. They targeted the "Abigel" company, where one of them delivered crossword puzzles. They meticulously planned the robbery, preparing knives, baseball bats, and a chair leg. They also bought tape to cover the peepholes in the neighbors' doors in the building. "Osa" was supposed to attend the job interview and pretend to be a candidate. At the agreed-upon signal, the boys were to attack Jolanta Brzozowska. During the trial, "Osa" reportedly testified that she deliberately delayed giving the signal because she felt sorry for the woman.

They Brutally Attacked Jola and Then Went for Pizza

The boys eventually lost patience. "Gołąb" was the first to enter the room and unexpectedly struck Brzozowska on the head. Initially, "Jogi" did not react, but he later joined his friend. Jola Brzozowska received 12 stab wounds. According to Weekend Gazeta.pl, "Gołąb" tormented the victim, driving the knife into Jolanta's skull like a screwdriver. While the boys were beating the woman, "Osa" was searching through the cabinets. The young people stole 400 PLN, phones, and jewelry, among other things. They took "Osa's" job application documents and left the building. They immediately sold some of the jewelry to a fence and then went out for pizza.

Although "Osa" Did Not Deliver the Blows, She Was Found Guilty of Murder and Became the First Woman Sentenced to Life Imprisonment

On the same day, the police began searching for the murderers, but it took them a month to track down the high school students. The young people were careless, and the police eventually traced the messages sent using the stolen pager. "Jogi" was the only one who confessed and testified against his friends. Eventually, "Osa" and "Gołąb" admitted to participating in the robbery, but they claimed they were not guilty of murder. "It's hard for me to talk about it. I didn't contribute to this woman's death. I know that saying sorry is not enough," said "Osa." The defense attorneys argued for a lighter sentence due to the young age of the perpetrators, but in March 1998, the court sentenced them to life imprisonment. "Osa" became the first woman to receive the maximum sentence. She was only 21 years old when she was sentenced.
