Some consider Polish cuisine to be one of the best in the world. Tourists from abroad sometimes visit just to try dishes like schabowy, rosół, or gołąbki. It’s no wonder, as these are our national culinary treasures. Their flavors can impress even those who don’t usually eat such dishes. To see if our cuisine is really that good, a family from Canada traveled over 7,000 kilometers. They are known on TikTok for traveling and trying dishes from different corners of the world. This time, they visited Wrocław to conduct their tests. They dined in restaurants, visited food stalls, and even went to a milk bar. However, the way they commented on the ordered dishes did not impress the Poles.
On TikTok, you can find various tests of Polish cuisine and our classic dishes. This time, the test was conducted by a boy named Noah, who travels the world with his sister and parents. On his account @nama.bites, he shows his reactions, and the comments are filled with suggestions of what he should try next. This time, the family chose to visit Wrocław.
First, they bought traditional pierogi, which were a must in this lineup. They ordered a portion with meat and another with potatoes and cheese. They were served with sour cream, sautéed onions, and dill. How did they like it? They couldn’t stop raving.
"These are my first pierogi in Poland. They are much better than the ones I had in Canada. The meat ones are good, but the potato ones are my favorite. I love pierogi with potatoes. I love how delicate they are. I adore the addition of dill; it adds freshness. The shallots are crispy."
Next, Noah decided to visit a milk bar. He had heard a lot about them but had never been to one. It was his first time, and from the menu, he chose chłodnik (cold beet soup) and red barszcz (beet soup). He immediately noted that the chłodnik looked like a dessert, but it wasn’t sweet at all, and it was cold. He really liked the taste, and the additions of egg and fresh herbs were a perfect match. The warm barszcz also impressed him. He noticed that it had a lot of beets, and the flavor made a huge impression on him.
His next meal was gołąbki with potatoes and tomato sauce. The first thing he noticed was that the portion was huge. He also mentioned that he really liked the dish because he had previously had a chance to try it using his grandmother’s recipe.
"Gołąbki have everything I love. Cabbage, meat, and sauce. [...] The tomato sauce is really creamy, I think they added cream to it. This is delicious."
What else did he try? Of course, he didn’t miss the famous rosół (chicken soup) and bigos (hunter’s stew). Although the latter was not served in its classic form, he still enjoyed it. After ordering bigos, people in the comments pointed out that it was the Wrocław version of the dish or simply red cabbage. In the case of rosół, there was no mistake, and the boy got exactly what he ordered. After tasting the broth, he praised its flavor and said it was the perfect dish for colds and chilly days.
