On February 4, 2022, Abby Ramsey underwent a bilateral salpingectomy. The surgery involved the removal of both fallopian tubes, effectively blocking the path of the egg from the ovaries to the uterus. She then underwent endometrial ablation, which involves removing the lining of the uterus. The combination of these two procedures allowed her to eliminate the chance of becoming pregnant.

She Underwent Sterilization at 24. The Thought of Getting Pregnant Kept Her Up at Night

Abby Ramsey had many negative experiences with contraceptive methods and didn’t want to rely solely on condoms. So, she decided to take matters into her own hands. The American woman not only wanted to eliminate the risk of unwanted pregnancy but also sought relief from long and heavy menstrual periods. At just 18 years old, she began searching for a doctor who would perform sterilization surgery. She made the decision at the age of 16 when she realized she didn’t see herself starting a family in the future:

I decided to live a childfree life since I was at least 16 years old. When I turned 19, I decided to start looking for options for permanent sterilization. The first gynecologist I mentioned it to told me I needed therapy (at that time, I was already in therapy) and said she wouldn’t discuss it with me.

After 6 Years, She Found a Specialist. She Wants to Remain Childfree by Choice

None of the specialists she consulted were willing to perform the surgery, and each one referred her to therapy. It wasn’t until six years later that she finally found a doctor who agreed to perform the procedure. Before that, she often encountered opinions that weren’t necessarily out of concern for her health.

The main arguments they gave were my age and the possibility that I might regret the decision. One doctor said she didn’t believe in performing 'unnecessary surgeries' [...]. The third doctor I met basically insinuated that something was wrong with me for not wanting children and said I needed to go to therapy to fix my brain so I could have children someday

- the 24-year-old explained in an interview with BuzzFeed.

Ramsey posted a video on her TikTok account, where she opens a box labeled "Congratulations" and pulls out documents confirming her sterilization. The video quickly gained popularity online, and her decision received mixed reactions. "I think a lot of people ignore the fact that sometimes people regret becoming parents. In the end, if I regret it, I'm the only one who will suffer" - she concluded.
