Netflix’s strict policy towards series continues. The streaming platform often cancels shows after the first season if they don't meet viewership requirements. Recently, it was announced that series like Ratched, about the early career of Mildred Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest at a psychiatric hospital, won’t be getting a continuation. The same fate befell the show The Brothers Sun, which was also well-received by both critics and viewers.
According to Variety, this time Netflix has canceled Dead Boy Detectives, set in the Sandman universe. The characters and storylines originated from Neil Gaiman’s iconic comics, and the further interpretation was well-received by both viewers and critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series achieved excellent scores - 92 proc. from critics and 90 proc. from viewers. Despite this, the second season won’t be made.
This is a must-watch for those craving a fresh take on detective series
- wrote Alex Valencia of "Q+ Magazine" in his review. Reviewers agreed on the well-written characters, the inclusiveness of the series, the way it built a dark atmosphere, and the clever dialogues. Mikel Zorilla from Espinof even ventured to say that Dead Boy Detectives is one of Netflix’s best series of 2024.
The show consists of eight episodes and tells the story of Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), the founders of the Dead Boy Detectives Agency. Edwin and Charles are teenagers born decades apart but only met after their deaths. They quickly became friends. Now, as ghosts, they solve criminal mysteries together and will stop at nothing, even facing off against evil witches, Hell itself, and even Death in person. With the help of clairvoyant Crystal (Kassius Nelson) and her friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), they work on solving the most difficult supernatural mysteries in the kingdom of the dead.
