We will be looking for mechanisms to provide very clear and strong support for borrowers who have lost their homes due to the floods. We are looking for ways to exempt them from paying ZUS [social insurance contributions]. This especially applies to small business owners who have lost either their workshop, their home, or both
- said Donald Tusk on Tuesday during a crisis meeting. "I have called on the Minister of Finance to do what can be done at this moment. He will be with us in the morning at a briefing tomorrow and will provide an appropriate report" - the Prime Minister added.
Donald Tusk mentioned that regarding support for borrowers, he has already spoken not only with the Minister of Finance but also with the banks. The Prime Minister stated that loan issues are the main concern expressed by everyone he has spoken to.
"Take a look, we've lost this apartment, we've lost our house, and we're still paying off the loan" - Tusk quoted the citizens he has spoken to.
They have nowhere to live, they've lost their house, and they'll have to keep repaying the loan. I fear that this is the case almost everywhere. I met families where one works in the Czech Republic, which is flooded and he can't go to work, and the other works in a butcher shop in Kłodzko, which is also flooded. They're not sure if they will be able to continue working. They have a completely ruined home, they have children, and they're still paying off a loan
- Donald Tusk explained.
The Prime Minister's Office has announced a total of PLN 1 billion in support for flood victims. Homeowners can receive up to PLN 100,000 for home repairs and up to PLN 200,000 for reconstruction. "First and foremost, we need to assess the value of our losses, so we should at least present an estimated cost of the damage, detailing what repairs are planned and their expected cost. Importantly, for larger aid amounts, we must keep invoices and receipts because the authorities may require an accounting of the aid," explained Martyna Pomykała to IAR.
Additionally, flood victims can quickly receive PLN 10,000 in immediate aid - PLN 2,000 as flood relief and PLN 8,000 as emergency assistance.
