The "Sims" game series has achieved cult status today. Created by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts, this life simulation game was officially released in early February 2000 and quickly became a massive hit. Since then, it has spawned three successful sequels, five spin-offs, and three mobile apps. Now, the franchise is set to expand with another production.
Back in early 2020, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Electronic Arts was planning a movie based on "The Sims." At the time, the creators declined to comment on the rumors, and the subject eventually went quiet, especially as speculation arose about the development of The Sims 5.
Now, it's been officially confirmed that the creators of the series have partnered with Amazon's MGM studio to produce a film directly tied to the game series. But who else is involved in the production? You might be surprised.
It appears that "The Sims" will be adapted into a live-action film by Vertigo Entertainment and LuckyChap, the latter co-owned by Barbie star Margot Robbie and her husband, Tom Ackerley. The movie will be directed by Kate Herron, known for her work on the first season of Loki and The Last of Us.
Herron also contributed to the screenplay, co-writing it with Briony Redman, who is known for scripting new episodes of Doctor Who. Specific details are still scarce, and the cast for the lead roles has yet to be announced.
More information about the film's production is expected to surface by early 2025, and if all goes according to plan, the movie could premiere as soon as the fall of that year.
