This kitchen accessory makes food preparation easier, and also helps protect your countertops from scratches. However, not everyone knows which material is best for a cutting board to ensure it’s safe for your health.
In many homes, plastic cutting boards are commonly used because they are relatively inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to clean. However, it turns out this is not a good choice. Experts from the American Chemical Society have shown that preparing food on a plastic board causes the human body to absorb large amounts of microplastic particles.
Dr. Syeed Md Iskander from North Dakota State University conducted a study with surprising results. A single plastic cutting board can produce 50 grams of polypropylene microplastics per year. Dr. Małgorzata Grembecka, a food chemist, explained to the portal "Interia" that microplastic is highly harmful to health.
It is known to cause developmental disorders, fertility issues; it can be neurotoxic, immunotoxic, and even geno- and cytotoxic. It is also known that the presence of microplastics increases oxidative stress

A good option is a glass cutting board. It doesn’t absorb moisture, is hygienic, and doesn’t promote the growth of bacteria. However, it can dull knives, and if dropped, it may damage tiles, making its use somewhat risky. A wooden cutting board is also a great choice. It is naturally antibacterial since the cellulose in the wood helps eliminate microbes. However, wood tends to wear out faster and can be easily scratched by knives. Additionally, care must be taken with oils, as greasy stains can be difficult to remove. The best options are boards made from beech, birch, elm, or ash wood.
