"I had an abortion. It wasn't the right time". Many don't know the story of Vaya Con Dios's lead singer

Vaya Con Dios is a Belgian music band formed in 1986 by Dani Klein, Dirk Schoufs, and Willy Lambregt. Although these names might not mean much to the younger generation, they likely recognize some hits like "Don't Cry for Louie", "What's a Woman" or "Don't Break My Heart". However, it's Dani Klein who sparks controversy today due to her candid admission about having had an abortion.

I also had an abortion. I became pregnant at a time when it wouldn’t have been good for the child or for me. If you’re in a bad relationship, don’t have the money to provide a future for the child, and can’t even manage your own life, then bringing a child into the world isn’t the best idea

- she admitted in an interview with the Polish portal wysokieobcasy.pl.

In Belgium, abortion is legal, but under two conditions

Access to abortion is a fundamental right that every democratic country must provide. It allows women to make decisions about their own bodies, protect their health, and not be forced to give up life opportunities

- said Belgian Minister for Equality Sarah Schlitz, quoted by tvnp.pl, when women in Poland took to the streets en masse to protest the tightening of abortion laws.

In Belgium, abortion is legal, but two important conditions must be met. The termination must be carried out in an abortion clinic or hospital that offers such services, ensuring the woman’s safety. Additionally, a consultation is required before the procedure, during which the woman confirms her decision to have the abortion.

"The decision should always belong to the woman"

As a young girl just entering adulthood, Dani Klein saw the abortion as necessary. Before becoming a famous singer, she left her family home at 17 and moved in with her then-boyfriend.

As Klein herself admitted, they were both still kids at the time, with no prospects or plans for the future. They didn’t know what life had in store for them or how they would manage. She wanted to take control of her own life and not be dependent on anyone.

So when she became pregnant, she quickly decided that it wasn’t the best moment in her life to have a child. She had no money, was in a relationship with no future, and had no support or hope for improvement. She had to take responsibility for her decisions but also knew that "bringing a child into the world wasn’t the best idea" - said Dani Klein.

Men still think they can decide over our bodies, but it’s women who have to bear the possible consequences of pleasurable sex. So why do men get to decide whether we are allowed to have an abortion or not? The decision should always belong to the woman. I can’t understand that in some countries, abortion is completely banned, even in cases of rape

- she added.
