The story of The Perfect Couple unfolds in a grand estate on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, where the Winbury family is preparing for the wedding of Benji (played by Billy Howle), one of the sons of famous novelist Greer Garrison-Winbury. Greer disapproves of his choice, believing that his fiancée is not the right match for him. During the wedding festivities, a murder occurs at the mansion, and a police investigation uncovers more secrets about the affluent family.
In addition to the Winburys, the estate is staffed by several household workers, led by a woman named Gosia. Unfortunately, the character struggles with the Polish language, even having difficulty pronouncing her own name. This isn’t surprising, as the creators did not cast a Polish actress in the role of Gosia, but rather Russian actress Irina Dubova. As a result, we hear a strong Eastern European accent, but that's where the similarities end.
The producers took it a step further, incorporating a more literal reference to Polish culture through food. Specifically, pierogi, which Gosia supposedly cooked for the youngest son of the main character. The mother, however, struggled to prepare the dish in the housekeeper's absence. In one scene, during a police interrogation, Gosia mentions that young William refused to eat the pierogi his mother made. "He was even skinnier than I was when I came back," she comments with a hint of superiority.
The Perfect Couple was directed by Susanne Bier, with the screenplay written by Courtney Grace, Alex Berger, Leila Cohan, Bryan M. Holdman, and Evelyn Yves. Other cast members include Donna Lynne Champlin, Jack Reynor, and Michael Beach.
