"Uglies" is Netflix’s latest sci-fi adventure. The film premiered on September 13 and quickly topped the streaming charts in 93 countries. In just a few days, the production was viewed nearly 27 million times worldwide, and it has become a hit in Poland as well.
Although "Uglies" didn’t take the number one spot in Poland within its first three days, being outperformed by "Bachelor Party," it secured the second position in the rankings. The dystopian story about a futuristic world captured the interest of many viewers.
"Uglies" tells the story of a new reality where, at the age of 16, young people undergo plastic surgery and move to the "better" part of the city. Tally eagerly awaits the day when specialists will fix her imperfections, but just before the transformation, an unexpected event occurs. Her friend escapes from the city, and Tally embarks on a journey to save her, which ultimately changes her perspective on the world.
The immense interest in the title doesn’t match its ratings. On Rotten Tomatoes, over a thousand viewers rated "Uglies," with the film receiving a disappointing 45% audience score. Critics were even less forgiving, giving it a mere 16% approval rating.
"One of the ugliest films of the year," writes Dennis Schwartz of the Film Critics Society. "'Uglies' is another Netflix project that tries to be more than it is, attempting to achieve this by hiring a strong cast. However, they waste their time on cheesy dialogue and an underdeveloped plot," adds Alex Maidy of JoBlo's Movie Network. Critics pointed to the film’s lack of subtlety, shallow content, and clumsy execution.
"Everything here is mediocre," says Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times, emphasizing that the film doesn’t deserve a sequel. "This is a scandalous mess that disrespects all the creators involved, except for the director, who clearly has no shame," sharply concludes Nadine Whitney of InSession Film.
