Tuvalu, the country in question, is located in western Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean and forms an archipelago known in Poland as the Lagoon Islands. This country, with an area of 26 km², has a population of just under 12,000 people, and according to statistics from the CEOWORLD report, only 3.7 thousand people visited Tuvalu in 2023.

Why do tourists so rarely visit this gem of the Pacific Ocean? The main obstacle is transportation

Although Tuvalu is set in a truly idyllic landscape, it doesn’t attract as much attention as luxury destinations like the Seychelles or the Maldives. This is mainly due to the challenges of getting to the archipelago. Unlike more tourist-friendly destinations, reaching the Lagoon Islands requires significant effort.

The simplest and fastest way to get to Tuvalu is to fly to Fiji, as that’s where the only flights to Funafuti - the capital of the least visited country in the world - depart. Simple? Not quite! In this option, the journey from Poland will take 35.5 hours and cost around 10,000 PLN. It involves multiple layovers in Istanbul, Singapore, Nadi, and Suva.

Soon it will disappear underwater. We’ll only be able to admire the Lagoon Islands for 25 more years

We won’t be able to enjoy this hidden gem of the Pacific Ocean for much longer. According to UN studies, Tuvalu could disappear underwater by 2050 due to climate change and the resulting rise in sea levels, as well as the impact of American soldiers during World War II. They leveled the entire island when establishing an airbase. In the event of flooding, Tuvalu’s inhabitants will be evacuated to Australia or one of the islands belonging to Fiji, and the Lagoon Islands will vanish forever.
