Does leaving your charger plugged in use electricity? The answer is simple

In times of rising energy costs, everyone is looking for ways to save. But does unplugging your charger after your phone is fully charged really make a big difference? Let's explain!

In many homes, chargers for smartphones, tablets, or wireless headphones have become a permanent fixture in electrical outlets. It’s convenient to have them always at hand, but does this convenience cost more than we realize?

Does a charger without a phone consume electricity?

Contrary to popular belief, a charger left plugged into the socket does indeed consume electricity, even when no device is connected to it. This is called standby power consumption. The amount of energy used is significantly less than when charging a device, but it still depends on how powerful the charger is.

How much does it cost?

In 2022, Dawid Kosiński, a tech video creator on YouTube, decided to test this for himself. In his experiment, he used a 90-watt fast charger and an energy consumption meter. The results? Even a charger this powerful, left plugged in all year, would generate a cost of only about 6 PLN (roughly $1.50).

It’s important to note that not all chargers are the same. Lower-power models can consume even less energy. For example, a typical 10-watt phone charger would likely generate a yearly cost several times lower than a 90-watt charger. The situation is a bit different with older chargers, which can consume up to 0.5 W, whereas modern EU-compliant chargers of similar power use up to 0.1 W in standby mode.

Is it worth unplugging the charger?

Yes and no. When it comes to savings, those few extra PLN per year (assuming you leave several chargers plugged in all the time) probably won’t make much of a difference to most people. However, there are other factors to consider:

  • Safety: Older or damaged chargers can pose a fire risk.
  • Environmental impact: A few chargers might not make a big difference, but when multiplied by millions of households, it can have a noticeable impact on the environment.
  • Tidiness: Fewer chargers plugged in means fewer cables cluttering up the house.
  • Charger lifespan: Constant exposure to small voltage fluctuations could theoretically shorten the lifespan of the charger, though this effect is difficult to measure.
