The Leon Schiller National Higher School of Film, Television, and Theatre in Łódź (PWSFTviT) is a Polish art school specializing in film arts. Founded in 1948, although it has changed its name several times since then, it has always been located on Targowa Street. It consistently maintains the highest level of education, which directly contributes to its appearance in the ranking.
"The Hollywood Reporter," published in the United States since 1930, is one of the most respected industry magazines. As explained by Forum Akademickie, the ranking of the 15 best film schools in the world -excluding American schools - was presented alphabetically, without specific rankings. The Łódź Film School has been included in this list several times before, and this year it stands alongside such distinguished institutions as France's La Fémis, the Czech Republic's FAMU, Italy's Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, and China's Beijing Film Academy.
In the note presented on the official ranking site, it was noted that the Łódź Film School is one of the oldest film schools in Europe. Among its graduates are directors Roman Polanski, Andrzej Wajda, and Krzysztof Kieślowski, as well as outstanding cinematographers Paweł Edelman, Dariusz Wolski, and Łukasz Żal. Forum Akademickie additionally highlights that more than five thousand students have graduated from the Polish school, collectively winning awards such as three Oscars, 10 Golden Palms, seven Golden Bears, and eight César Awards. So, how did the news of another success resonate in Łódź?
As mentioned earlier, "The Hollywood Reporter" has recognized the Łódź Film School multiple times, but this does not diminish the significance of this honor.
This means prestige because it is one of the oldest magazines in the world, primarily industry-specific. We have been in this ranking every year for several years now, but our presence there continues to bring us joy each year. It is an international ranking that does not include American film schools, but even so, being in this top fifteen is highly prestigious. It is a great honor for us. This is due to the success of the films made by our students and alumni who graduate from Targowa Street each year. This certainly plays a role in the criteria for selecting our school
- said Krzysztof Brzezowski, spokesperson for the Łódź Film School, in an interview with Eska.pl. Brzezowski also notes that being included in such an exclusive ranking confirms the effectiveness of the school's educational processes. It can be said that this is a form of feedback. The importance of all individuals associated with the Łódź institution is also highlighted by the school itself on Facebook.
We congratulate our lecturers, students, and staff- your talents, work, and efforts allow the School to continuously maintain a high level, appreciated not only in the country but also in far corners of the globe
- reads a post published by the school. The Łódź Film School trains directors, cinematographers, animators, photographers, screenwriters, editors, film and television production managers, and actors, with a particular emphasis on practical exercises.
