The situation in Poland is becoming increasingly dramatic, especially in the southern regions. It's all due to the Genoa low-pressure system that has arrived in the country. The IMWM has issued several warnings about heavy rains and storms. Water levels in rivers have exceeded safe limits, and flooding has begun in surrounding areas. The situation in Nysa, where the Stal volleyball club is based, is particularly dire. A match against Asseco Resovia Rzeszów was scheduled for Sunday, but due to the extreme weather, the Nysa club requested the match be postponed. The response from their rivals shocked everyone, causing a huge uproar online.
On Saturday evening, Stal Nysa released a statement on social media, explaining the dramatic situation in Nysa, affecting both the residents and the volleyball players and their families, who live there.
The situation in our region is very difficult. The home of one of our players has been flooded, and the families of our players are in danger. Therefore, we submitted a request to Asseco Resovia and the PlusLiga authorities to postpone tomorrow's match. We wanted to return to Nysa and focus our efforts on helping those in need during this disaster
- the club wrote.
However, the request was denied.
Unfortunately, since the match is scheduled for tomorrow, we did not receive approval to postpone it. Therefore, we will take to the court tomorrow and give our all, so we can return to Nysa as quickly as possible to support our families, loved ones, neighbors, and most importantly, our loyal fans in their battle against the disaster
- the statement read.
This situation outraged internet users, who wanted to know who lacked compassion - was it the PlusLiga authorities or Asseco Resovia? They quickly got their answer. It was the actions of the Rzeszów club, which surprised fans, who harshly criticized their decision.
"I don't even want to comment on this... Fair Play, full stop" - wrote Jakub Balcerzak on X. "This is really weak" - added Mateusz Babiarz. Even Andrzej Wrona, a player for Projekt Warsaw, weighed in, asking bluntly: "Asseco Resovia, do you have a heart?". He added: "Maybe PlusLiga should step in and make the decision to postpone the match?".
"Asseco Resovia has lost respect from fans for the rest of the season with this one decision. The match turned out to be more important than the fate of people who have to fight against the forces of nature. I'm sure they'll explain it with a tight schedule, saying there was no other available date. But if they wanted to, they could find a way to make it work" - noted Seweryn Czernek of WP SportoweFakty.
Asseco Resovia remained silent for a long time, not addressing the issue. It was only late at night that they released an official statement, agreeing to postpone the match. "Asseco Resovia S.A. announces that in response to the request to postpone the league match against PSG Stal Nysa scheduled for September 15, 2024, at 2:45 p.m. in Rzeszów, the club's management has decided to approve the postponement to another date" - the statement read.
The disaster situation, being unpredictable, justifies postponing the match, allowing the players and coaching staff to focus on the safety of their loved ones during this difficult time
- the statement added. The club's management also expressed solidarity with their rivals.
However, these actions - or rather, the delay in taking them - were not well received by fans. Many internet users felt that although the club eventually made the right decision, it seemed more like an attempt to salvage their reputation. In their view, the decision to postpone the match should have been made immediately when Stal made the request, not after an online storm erupted.
