Where Are the Largest Waterfalls in the USA?
If you're planning a trip to the United States, make sure to include some of these awe-inspiring waterfalls in your itinerary. These spots are guaranteed to leave a lasting impression. Let's take a look at some of the largest waterfalls in the country.
Niagara Falls
When talking about the largest waterfalls in the United States, we must start with one of the most famous waterfalls in the world - Niagara Falls. Located on the border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York, the power of this waterfall lies in the volume of water that flows through it. With a flow rate of 2,400 cubic meters of water per second, it outshines all other waterfalls in the U.S. Niagara Falls actually consists of three separate waterfalls: two on the American side and one on the Canadian side. The American ones are the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, with heights ranging from 21 to 30 meters due to the rocks at their base and a width of 320 meters. The Canadian side features Horseshoe Falls, which is larger, standing at 53 meters tall and 790 meters wide. Niagara Falls has long been a popular tourist destination, with one of the most exciting activities being a boat ride that takes visitors close to the thundering cascades.
Olo'upena Falls
Next on our journey through the largest waterfalls in the U.S. takes us to Hawaii, the westernmost state. On the beautiful Hawaiian island of Moloka’i, you’ll find the highest waterfall in the United States - Olo'upena Falls. At 900 meters tall, it ranks as the fourth-highest waterfall in the world. Located on steep, lush hills, the waterfall is accessible only by air. Because of this, its exact width and water flow are not well known. However, it is largely fed by rainfall, meaning that during the dry season, the waterfall can completely dry up.
Yosemite Falls
Another notable entry on our list is Yosemite Falls, located in California’s Yosemite National Park, nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountains. This park is known for its stunning waterfalls, but Yosemite Falls is the crown jewel. Standing at 739 meters tall, the waterfall is divided into three tiers, with drops of 440 meters, 206 meters, and 98 meters, respectively. While its height places Yosemite Falls high on the list of the largest U.S. waterfalls, its sheer beauty is what draws thousands of visitors each year. It is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world, especially during February when sunlight hits the water at the perfect angle, creating an optical illusion known as Flowing Lava or Fire Falls. During this time, the water appears to glow in fiery, golden hues, resembling cascading flames.
