Iga Świątek (1st in the WTA rankings) claimed her fourth Roland Garros title on the Parisian clay courts in June of this year. Since then, however, her performance has fallen below expectations. She was eliminated in the third round of Wimbledon, failed to secure Olympic gold in Paris despite being the heavy favorite, and performed poorly in both Cincinnati and the US Open. At the former, she lost in the semifinals to Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (2nd in the WTA) 3-6, 3-6, while in the US Open quarterfinals, she was defeated by American Jessica Pegula (3rd in the WTA) 6-2, 6-4.
Iga Świątek has been taking a break from tennis tournaments for over three weeks. The world number one withdrew from the tournaments in Beijing and Tokyo.
The decision of Iga Świątek to withdraw from the tournament in Beijing has stirred up a lot of emotions and provoked conspiracy theories. However, the fuss is unnecessary, as we actually know very little about the reasons behind this decision, and several other players have also opted out of the event. We also tend to forget that athletes have a right to privacy, and taking a break during the season could be significantly beneficial
- wrote Sport.pl journalist Dominik Senkowski.
Świątek's decisions continue to spark discussion and media speculation. A longer article devoted to the current state of affairs surrounding the Polish tennis player was recently published by Polityka. Journalist Marcin Piątek reported on the relationships within Świątek's team. According to him, Iga’s psychologist Daria Abramowicz sometimes takes on coaching roles and is practically always by Świątek’s side. Piątek pointed out that no serious coach would accept this kind of involvement from a psychologist.
Daria Abramowicz is not only her psychologist but also her mentor, guardian angel, and friend. Well-informed sources say that she sometimes steps into coaching roles, which means there is no discussion about possibly replacing Wiktorowski because no serious coach would agree to such an arrangement. Journalists present at the tournaments say that Abramowicz practically never leaves Świątek's side and seems to have total control over her, but apparently, Iga is comfortable with this kind of isolation
- "Polityka" reports.
The journalist also revealed that he sent several questions to Daria Abramowicz. However, she avoided giving a specific response.
Polityka sent Abramowicz questions: How does Iga handle pressure? Do her recent painful losses and a sort of paralysis on the court stem from a mental block? Is the opinion justified that by focusing on Iga's well-being, the psychologist is isolating her from her surroundings? Is it possible to form friendships in the tennis world, and can the potential lack of them be compensated by relationships within the team? Abramowicz responded after more than two days, saying that she wouldn't be able to answer at this time, but after the season ends, she would be more available
- Piątek added.
This season, Świątek has a record of 60 wins and eight losses. It’s possible she may compete in the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan, though that remains uncertain.
