Information about "Gladiator 3" has now moved beyond hints and rumors. Until recently, Ridley Scott had been openly considering filming the final chapter of Maximus' story, but due to the extensive work surrounding the upcoming release of "Gladiator 2", it remained in the "I'm considering it, I want to, I'm thinking" stage. Now, Scott is no longer hesitating and is actively working on the script. In fact, he already has part of it written.
For now, predicting the financial success of "Gladiator 2" is mere speculation. However, Ridley Scott is undoubtedly paying close attention to this year's revivals of long-dormant franchises and is likely confident about the future of "Gladiator 2." "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" has become the biggest hit of the early fall, with the return of the third installment of "Deadpool," a second "Joker," another modification of "Mad Max," and "Twisters"... From that list, only "Joker: Folie à Deux" seems to be facing challenges. So, it’s no surprise that Scott is not only talking about his dream of making "Gladiator 3" but also the progress of the project:
I already have eight pages of the script. I have the beginnings of some very good ideas
- he said in a recent interview with "Total Film". At 86 years old, Ridley Scott is producing nine other projects in addition to "Gladiator 2" and directing five more. Given all this, there is a risk that "Gladiator 3" may remain just on paper.
Two trailers for the second part of "Gladiator" have already been released. The film is set to hit theaters on November 22, and it's clear what to expect. Footage has been shown of an impressive set, including a near-full-scale Colosseum and Roman streets. A significant portion of the visuals will be created using special effects, which Scott loves to use, believing that if a technology exists, it's worth using. Expect AI-created animals, full-scale battles, fires, and naval warfare. It appears that "Gladiator 2" will aim to dazzle and overwhelm the audience. However, the open question remains whether the visual spectacle will overshadow the storyline, which was more critical than arena battles in the original 1999 "Gladiator."
In the leading roles, we'll see Paul Mescal as the titular gladiator, with Pedro Pascal as his arch-nemesis. In addition to this duo, Denzel Washington (the gladiator owner) will be vying for influence, alongside not only a Roman general (Pascal), but also Joseph Quinn as Emperor Geta and Fred Hechinger as his brother, Emperor Caracalla.
