Czech Flood Victim Found in Poland: "We have received DNA test results from our Polish colleagues regarding the body found in Poland near the village of Głuchołazy. The analysis confirmed that it is the 27-year-old woman who went missing on September 14. We have still not been able to locate the two missing men," Czech police announced on Wednesday, October 23. According to reports from the Novinky portal, this is the sixth victim of the flood in the Czech Republic.
What Happened: Authorities reported that during the September flood in the village of Lipová-lázne, a car fell into the raging Staríč stream. The stream flows into the Biała Głuchołaska in Poland and then into the Nysa Kłodzka River. Four people were in the car, but only one managed to escape.
Dozens of Kilometers: District Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson in Opole, Stanisław Bar, reported in early October on Radio Opole that the body of the woman, who was likely the Czech victim, was found in Bodzanów (Opole Province), more than 30 kilometers from where she was swept away by the river. The car was found about half a kilometer from where it was carried away by the stream.
Nysa and Lewin Brzeski Municipality Plan to Sue Wody Polskie: A collective lawsuit is being organized by local entrepreneurs and residents. What is it about? The initiators of the lawsuit aim to prove that the lack of or incorrect decisions by Wody Polskie led to the flooding of cities and villages in the Opole region during the September flood. The next step will be the possibility of claiming compensation, as individual claims have a lower chance of success. Flood victims accuse Wody Polskie of allowing excessive water flow into the Nysa Kłodzka, which caused the protective levees to fail under the pressure of the incoming water. In response to the accusations, Wody Polskie stated that other waterways also feed into the Nysa Kłodzka, and the situation was worsened by a backflow from the Oder River.
Flood in Poland: In mid-September, a flood swept through the southern part of Poland, causing massive damage estimated at several billion zlotys. The tragedy resulted in the deaths of seven people. According to data provided by the government, over 970 million zlotys have been allocated so far to help the flood victims.
